The Thai alphabet

44 consonants, 19 vowels and 5 tone marks. Every character below has its own page with a mnemonic, the sound it makes, and example words in native-quality Thai audio - not your browser's voice.

Where to start

Learn the consonants by class rather than in dictionary order. The class is the single piece of information you need most often, because it is half of every tone rule, and the alphabetical order gives you no help with it.

Then learn the five tones and the ten rules that connect the two. That is the whole system - there is nothing else hiding behind it.
