Worth knowing

Not spicy means less spicy
ไม่เผ็ด (mâi phèt) will still usually arrive with chilli in it. If you genuinely can't take heat, ไม่เผ็ดเลย - not spicy at all - is the phrase you want, and it's worth saying twice.
ขอ is how you ask for things
ขอ (khǒr) plus a noun is the polite all-purpose request: ขอน้ำครับ, may I have water. It works in restaurants, shops and taxis, and it is far more useful early on than learning a verb for each situation.
There is a culture note for this chapter too - the thing a phrasebook will not tell you.
